The work I have submitted within this digital portfolio uses a variety of media including: ink, collage, fineliner pen, reductive monoprint, textured collograph print and photo dry print. I believe that this selection of recent work, ranging from life drawing to textured pieces, is a representation of my ability to produce original and creative pieces of art.
A course in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University interests me in particularly because I believe it will give me the opportunity to develop more complex ideas, using new techniques that will allow me to explore topics and subjects which I would not have been able to before. Working within a studio would allow me to be very open in refining and reworking parts of my projects, which I believe would strongly aid both my technical and creative ability. Studying in Manchester would also act as a personal stimulus within my work due to its vibrant atmosphere and diverse culture.
I take inspiration from a variety of sources, artists are an obvious part of looking at a particular subject matter or technique in depth. I recently visited the Ashes 57 exhibition "The message" in Fallowfield, showing the work of a graphic designer, illustrator and photographer. I found this both interesting and inspiring, particularly in looking at how she had used text and a black and white theme within her prints, adding one other colour for effect. I later tried to incorporate this into my own drawings and ideas on my most recent subject matter about rebellion. I also use my environment as a stimulus for new ideas, for example in my most recent project I have linked together the idea of punk and rebellion with the controversial topic of the student riots and education cuts to give my work more depth and meaning behind it, reinventing the concepts of uprising and disobedience. My work often involves joining ideas together, combining concepts both imaginatively and creatively to gain a deeper meaning behind outcomes. I am constantly looking for sources of outside inspiration and ways of refining and, ultimately, improving my work to give sophisticated outcomes with renewed purpose. I am eager to start my journey into the experimentation and development of my artistic and creative talents, in order for them to mature to a higher educational level.
